Rene Magritte was a Belgian born artist that did surrealist artwork. He is renowned for creating witty and thought provoking art that tests perceptions of reality. Some of his artwork is said to depict the darker side of love, showing frustrations and complications that may exist between lovers. In The Lovers, a man and a woman embrace, but their passionate kiss is blocked by a sheet bound around their faces. The sheets prevent them from realizing the attempted kiss. The colors are dark and glim and there is no attempt by either person to find their way around the situation. I chose this piece because it displays the darker side of love that many people want to avoid, but cant always avoid.
