Gustav Klimt - The Kiss

Artist: Gustav Klimt
Title: The Kiss
Dimensions: 180 x 180 cm
Medium: Oil on canvas

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter that contained many exampled of eroticism, which had caused him to be criticized for some of his earlier work being comparable to pornography.   The Kiss is one of his most popular works and displays a man and a woman locked in an embrace and sealed together with a passionate kiss. They are wrapped in a gold cloak and the image is in abstract form. This painting is a good example of Klimt’s obsession with eroticism, which was controversial at the time but was still well received. The painting also depicts the apparent Arts and Crafts movement of decorative art.  I choose this portrait for the exhibition because of the purest form of affection that it presents. The intensity of both the protagonists are presented very well with nothing but a mere kiss.

Marc Chagall - The Birthday

Artist: Marc Chagall
Title: The Birthday
Dimensions: 31.7 x 39.2 in.
Medium: Oil on cardboard
Date: 1915

Marc Chagall was a Russian painter that used love as his main inspiration for his paintings. Chagall was part of the Cubism and Expressionism art movement of the time. He painted the birthday a few weeks before his weeding to his wife Bella, which then became the center of his inspiration for painting about love. The Birthday expresses their passionate love for each other and how happy they were together. Both character are floating in the air as if carried by the wind of love. The colors are toned down so that the true focus remains on the two lovers engaged in a sincere kiss. I chose this piece because of the sentiment that it displays and its honest dedication to the emotion of blissful love.

Pablo Picasso - The Kiss

Artist: Pablo Picasso, October 1881 - April 1973
Title: The Kiss

Pablo Picasso was a genius in cubism artwork and was highly influence by his fascination with eroticism. His pieces contained many exaggerations and abstract images. The portrait The Kiss was one of the many paintings that he completed depicting his second wife Jacqueline Roque, which became his biggest inspiration in his later life. He had never painted so many pieces of any other previous female muse. A unique trait that this piece includes is the showing of the tongue, which was not considered appropriate for such paintings. All of the features of both himself and Jacqueline are exaggerated, which is a staple in Picasso’s work. I chose this piece because of its depiction of his devotion to the apparent love of Picassos’ life.

Jackson Pollock - Male and Female

Artist: Jackson Pollock, January 1912 - August 1956
Title: Male and Female
Dimensions: 186.1 x 126.2 cm
Medium: Oil on canvas
Date: 1942

Jackson Pollock was a Russian painter that struggled with mental instability. It was recommended that he use his expressive art as therapeutic treatment. The portrait Male and Female was created during as such a means. The image displays two distorted figures, one male and one female entwined in each other.  The colors are bright and vibrant and the two figures appear in abstract form. Each figure is meant to represent unique characteristics. The male has numbers and mathematical symbols that are said to represent intellect and culture and the female has big eyes with long eyelashes and a curvy figure to represent sensuality and nature. When asked to elaborate on his artwork Pollock claimed that “ any attempt on my part to say something about it… could only destroy it” (Philamuseum).
